Elfie is a 7 month old, lab and pit bull mix. He is also a really smart guy! He figures
things out pretty quickly, which can be a good and bad thing, ha ha. He learned how to
sit for a treat in a matter of seconds watching his foster sister, Snowball. He comes
when he is called and was pretty much completely potty trained in four days. He still has
some accidents but he goes to the door to let you know he needs to go out before he comes
back to pee on the rug- so be aware of the subtle clues and act fast! He also was
determined to get out of his metal crate and scooted the plastic bottom of it all the way
out until it was about a foot away from the crate itself and he was sitting on the metal.
The crate had a few kinks because another dog had tried to escape before, and he quickly
learned how to warp the wire to squeeze his head and body out. I came home one day and he
and Snowball were hanging out on the bed together... luckily they were both fine. (He has
a new crate now).
He gets along well with Snowball and another female pit bull in the neighborhood that he
has played with so far, he is curious about other dogs and very submissive, so perfect
for a home that already has a dog, boy or girl that likes to be in charge. He generally
likes new dogs quicker then new people. It took him longer to like me then it did for him
to like Snowball. He is very timid and even barks and growls at people he doesn't know,
but I tell them to come in and ignore him and he becomes their best bud, trying to get
close and even crawls in their laps to get a better view. Basically it's the classic bark
is worse then his bite. I am trying to slowly get him accustomed to seeing people by
walking him around school, but it can be hard when he barks, and strange men especially
make him pee in fright in the hallway.
Once he knows you, he is a big cuddle bug, trying to get close to you in every way
possible. Snowball gets a little jealous because when I am reading on the couch he will
come over, get in my lap, push the book away and stare up at me waiting to be pet. I
think eventually he will like people more, he is still young. He is not aggressive toward
anyone, just afraid, so he is not a danger at all. I think he would do well in a home
that could spend time socializing him with other people and dogs. But he is a perfect
companion and is very sensitive and intuitive to his owner, and always entertaining. As I
write this he is hiding out between the wall and the couch- his new favorite spot he
likes to squeeze through as a short-cut to the kitchen, eventually he is going to get
stuck though, with all the growing he is doing!
He is healing pretty quickly after his surgery and does not see it as a hindrance at all
as he tries to run up and down the courtyard to keep up with the other dogs. I think he
will eventually just walk with a little character. I hope he finds a good home with
someone that will appreciate his great personality and humor.
